These Psalms are chanted in Iyaric, a mystical version of English, a.k.a. The Language of Rastafari. I choose to chant them in this way because Iyaric brings out the true meaning and power of Psalms. Iyaric, by nature, creates a word sound that is more unifying.

English-translated versions of the book of Psalms have a lot of slavery-mentality language and interpretation which seems to come from the idea that we are supposed to follow God’s law just for the sake of obeying a God who is mighty and more powerful than us who can strike us down at any time. That is by far, NOT my relationship with Jah, my Source of Life. I do my best to translate this dark interpretation of King David’s words into poetry that is filled with the Light of Truth.

For more information on Iyaric, I recommend the 3-book series, “Itations of Jamaica and I Rastafari” by Millard Faristzaddi.

A Few Examples of Iyaric Used in These Psalms:

  • JAH – The Lord

    • Our Source of Life, Creator of All & Everything, that Ineffable Power called many names by many peoples throughout human history, but all referring to our same Source of Life, Mother & Father of All Creation

    • While “Lord” does refer to power, authority, influence, and ability to rule, it’s also been used to refer to men who were masters of a feudal manor and such who used their power to dominate and oppress others. Therefore, I don’t find it suitable when referencing our Source of Life.

    • Even “God” has picked up some negative energy with it throughout history due to the oppressive ways of those who wrongly harmed others, claiming it was in God’s name.

    • I use Jah to refer to our Source of Life, which is what’s used in Iyaric and also much more palatable to hear for many, as well as recognizable thanks to the widespread popularity of reggae music. Great Spirit and Wankan Tanka were used by some of the natives of North America, Shiv Shakti was originally used by some in India, Eyesus was used by some in Ethiopia, but no matter how many names are used, they are all referring to our One Source of Life, Creator of All.

  • I AND I – We, Us, or Our

    • Refers to the divinity of our Source of Life within us all, and also how we are all One, reinforcing the idea that we should love and treat each other just as well as we want to be loved and treated.

  • I’SIDER – Consider

    • “Con” means to deceive or trick someone, so by replacing it with “I”, we uphold truth in the meaning of the word instead of deceit.

  • I’TINUALLY - Continually

    • “Con” means to deceive or trick someone, so by replacing it with “I”, we uphold truth in the meaning of the word instead of deceit.

  • OVERSTAND – Understand

    • To express that one fully perceives the intended meaning, rather than “under”standing which indicates the opposite of how the word is defined. For example, if one is underpaid or underappreciated, it indicates that person is not paid or appreciated enough. Wouldn’t it be better to be overpaid or over-appreciated? Therefore, “overstand” expresses the true meaning of the word better than “understand” does.

The negative power gives us poison so that we may die but we give elixir to the negative power so that it may die. So the negative power dies with elixir and it gives us poison, really so that we may die. So it gives us hardships, problems, and troubles; then we are troubled and full of problems and difficulties and diseases and so many other things. But we are to fight with the weapons of love, peace, and enjoyment, and when we are using these weapons, we are enjoying, and as we are going on enjoying, the negativity is going to be conquered, and gets weaker and weaker.
